Landmark Banner Project
Harrisburg SusqueCentennial Landmark Banner Series
As part of Harrisburg’s 150th anniversary of being incorporated as a city in 1860, a system of colorful banners are installed on street light poles in downtown Harrisburg which feature important landmarks in the city both past and present. These banners are in place during the summer of 2009 and will be reinstalled during the summer of 2010 when the SusqueCentennial activities will culminate.
Some of the banners are colorful expressions of the SusqueCentennial spirit while most display a noted Harrisburg landmark and the date in which the landmark was either built or emerged on the Harrisburg cityscape, although in many instances the landmarks have been either altered or expanded over time or no longer exist.
The landmarks are captured through black and white photography, lithographs and color postcards of the period. Most of the images were retrieved from the collections of the Harrisburg City Archives with others provided by the Dauphin County Historical Society, the Historic Harrisburg Association and the Pennsylvania State Archives.

The map of downtown Harrisburg notes the number and locations of all street light poles on which the landmark banners are hung. Each banner has a number which is associated with the number of each street light pole. For more information about the landmark on each banner, click on the star on the map, and an image of the banner and a brief description of the landmark will appear.
